Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 reach Switch 2 October 16; review copies show mixed performance

Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 launch on Switch 2 October 16. Pre-launch press is mostly positive, but Resident Evil 4 dips in handheld mode.

CONFIRMED

The Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 remakes arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 tomorrow, October 16, 2026, as digital releases on the eShop, with physical editions following on January 29, 2027. Capcom set those dates during the September 9 Nintendo Direct, as reported by Gematsu and Video Games Chronicle. Review copies went out early, and the first wave of coverage lands somewhere between “excellent handheld ports” and “competent yet unambitious.”

What we know

Capcom announced the three ports during the Nintendo Direct of September 9, 2026, according to Gematsu. The lineup is Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition. VGC, quoting Capcom’s description, says the RE2 Deluxe Edition bundles an extra DLC pack with two Leon costumes, three Claire costumes, a deluxe Samurai Edge and a soundtrack swap. RE4 Gold Edition includes the Separate Ways DLC and the Extra DLC pack. Pre-orders opened the same day as the announcement.

The big change from the Switch 1 era is that these are real ports. VGC notes the original Switch versions of RE2 and RE3 were cloud editions, while the Switch 2 versions are native RE Engine builds playable offline. Capcom’s press text, as relayed by VGChartz, repeats that all three are RE Engine versions and adds that a limited-time early adopter discount runs through November 7, 2026.

This is Capcom’s second Switch 2 batch. VGC reported that Resident Evil 7, Village and Requiem all launched on the system on February 27, 2026, and GameSpot’s review of the Requiem port called it “incredibly competent.” For context, Gematsu lists the original releases as RE2 on January 25, 2019, RE3 on April 3, 2020 and RE4 on March 24, 2023.

GameSpot published a 30-minute hands-on on September 16 and said the three ports look to be excellent handheld versions. That was a pre-release preview rather than a full review.

The review scores so far come from outlets outside our approved list, so read them as press opinion. Per a VGTimes roundup, Nintendo Life gave RE2 Deluxe a 9/10 and RE3 a 6/10. Creative Bloq scored RE3 at 3.5/5. Pocket Tactics gave the set a 9/10 and reported no issues.

Performance is where opinions split. GameWatcher says all three target 60 FPS and hold it consistently, with RE2 the smoothest and RE4 the most demanding, though it also notes RE3 can dip in busy set pieces. Creative Bloq and FRVR report softer textures, pop-in and frame drops in RE4, especially in handheld mode. FRVR sums the trio up as “competent yet unambitious.” Nintendo Life, via VGTimes and ResetEra, flagged the absence of ray tracing and gyro controls, and Creative Bloq called the controls uneven and a missed opportunity.

What we don’t know yet

Pricing has not been reported by any outlet on our approved list. Nintendo Life lists eShop prices of £34.99 for RE2, £24.99 for RE3 and £44.99 for RE4 in the UK, with pre-order discounts, so the claim circulating on shattered.io that the games are unpriced appears wrong. Still, we are not treating those figures as settled until an approved source carries them.

File sizes are confirmed by Nintendo Life via the official eShop listings: 14.0 GB for RE2, 12.9 GB for RE3 and 29.0 GB for RE4. Resolution targets have only surfaced on attractmo.de, a low-reliability site, which lists 1080p with DLSS. Unverified.

Physical availability is also fuzzy. Gematsu confirms January 29, 2027, but KitGuru says the boxed copies are “at least” for Europe and Asia. No approved source has confirmed North America.

What is rumored

Insider Dusk Golem, as reported by VGC, claimed in September 2025 that all six RE Engine Resident Evil games would come to Switch 2. That is a single anonymous insider, grade D, but Capcom has since announced every title on the list.

Separately, a Yahoo Tech review and a shattered.io piece mention a Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake for 2027 with Switch 2 included. Neither outlet is on our approved list and Capcom has not announced it in anything we can cite.

What it means

If you want Raccoon City on a handheld without a cloud connection, these are the versions to get, and the early adopter discount through November 7 takes some of the sting out of pricing. The caveats are RE4, which several reviewers say strains the hardware in handheld mode, and the missing gyro aiming, which stings on a Nintendo platform. RE2 looks like the safest buy, RE3 the most divisive, and the physical question for North America is one to watch.
