Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is Capcom’s 2017 first-person survival horror game, and the entry that dragged the series back to being frightening after the action-heavy Resident Evil 6. It swaps zombies and global conspiracies for a single rotting plantation house in rural Louisiana, a family that will not stay dead and a protagonist who cannot fight back the way you want him to. The fear comes from scale: you are small, the Bakers are everywhere and the house is listening.

Story and setting

You play Ethan Winters, an ordinary guy with no combat training and no connection to Umbrella, S.T.A.R.S. or anyone else in the series. His wife Mia vanished three years ago and was presumed dead. Then a video message arrives from her, telling him to stay away. He does the opposite.

The trail leads to Dulvey, Louisiana, in July 2017. The Baker family’s plantation sits in the bayou, half-swallowed by swamp, and the whole property has been quietly sealed off since a string of disappearances. Ethan walks in through the back of a derelict guest house and the game never lets him leave the grounds until the credits roll.

What he finds there is Jack, Marguerite and Lucas Baker, plus a shrivelled old woman in a wheelchair everyone calls Grandma. They are not zombies. They talk, they taunt, they sit down to dinner. Capcom pitched the game as “Texas Chain Saw Massacre meets Resident Evil” and that is exactly what the first three hours feel like.

The premise stays simple on purpose. Find Mia, get out, work out what happened to the Bakers. Every answer arrives through VHS tapes, scattered notes and a steadily widening map of the main house, the old house, the testing area and the swamp beyond.

How it scares you

The camera is the first weapon. Resident Evil 7 was the series’ first mainline game in first person, and on PlayStation 4 it shipped with full PlayStation VR support. Peering round a corner is now your actual body leaning into the unknown, and the Baker house is built from tight hallways and doors that open inward.

Jack Baker is the second weapon. For the opening act he stalks the main house in real time, unkillable, stomping through walls and calling your name. You can hear him on the floor above and have to decide whether to crouch behind a crate or sprint for the next room. Hiding is not a formal mechanic, but the game gives you enough blind spots and loud enough footsteps to make every corridor a gamble.

Resources are deliberately miserly. Handgun ammo comes in ones and twos, herbs are mixed with chem fluid for first aid and the inventory is a tiny grid you unlock a few slots at a time. Saves happen at cassette tape recorders. On Madhouse difficulty, the game’s hardest setting, each save burns a physical cassette and enemies hit harder, so every tape becomes a decision.

The Molded fill in the gaps between family encounters. They are tar-black humanoid growths with too many teeth, they crawl out of the walls and they absorb headshots in a way that makes a shotgun feel essential. Flying insect swarms in the old house are worse, because they eat ammo and chip your health while Marguerite shrieks through the floorboards.

Sound design does the rest. The RE Engine, which Capcom built for this game, pushes creaking timber, dripping water and the wet slap of Molded on tile straight into your headphones. Long stretches have no music at all. When the score does kick in, it is because something is about to tear through a door.

Pacing is the clever part. The game stacks the Bakers in sequence, each with their own section of the map and their own rules, then pivots into a puzzle-trap chapter and finally a more conventional shooter stretch. Most people agree the final two hours are the weakest, but by then the game has already done its damage.

Spoiler warning

Everything below spoils the full plot of Resident Evil 7, its DLC endings and a reveal from Resident Evil Village.

The source of everything is Eveline, a girl who looks about ten and is actually E-001, a bioweapon grown by a group called The Connections from an engineered fungus. She secretes a mold that infects people, bends their minds and lets her control them. What she wants is a family. The Bakers were kind people who pulled survivors out of a wrecked tanker in 2014 and paid for it by becoming her puppets.

Mia was one of those survivors. She worked for The Connections as a handler, escorting Eveline on the ship when Eveline broke loose and sank it. That is why Mia told Ethan to stay away, and why she attacks him with a chainsaw early on. The hand you lose in that scene is stapled back on with first aid fluid, which is the game’s first big hint that Ethan is not entirely normal either.

Grandma in the wheelchair is Eveline. The mold accelerates her ageing, so by 2017 she is a withered old woman who has been sitting in plain sight the whole time. Lucas is the odd one out: The Connections secretly cured him and he has been spying on his own family, which is why he builds the escape room traps rather than attacking Ethan directly.

The one real choice comes late. With a single dose of serum, Ethan cures either Mia or Zoe, the Baker daughter who has been helping him. Curing Mia is the canon ending. Zoe stays behind, Mia escapes with Ethan to the ship and the story moves on. Curing Zoe gets her killed by Eveline moments later, and Mia sacrifices herself so Ethan can escape. Both paths converge on the same final boss.

That boss is Eveline, who grows into a towering mass of mold. Ethan injects her with a necrotoxin, then finishes her off with a weapon dropped from a helicopter carrying a blue Umbrella logo. The man who steps out is Chris Redfield, now working for a reformed Umbrella Corporation that spends its time cleaning up the old one’s mess.

Two DLC chapters close the loose ends. Not a Hero follows Chris into the mines to deal with Lucas and The Connections. End of Zoe introduces Joe Baker, Jack’s brother, who punches Molded to death bare-handed and gets Zoe her own cure. Resident Evil Village (2021) then drops the last bombshell: Jack killed Ethan in the house during that first encounter, and the mold brought him back. He has been dead since the first hour.

Where it fits in the series

Resident Evil 7 is the seventh numbered mainline game and the first on the RE Engine, which Capcom has used for every entry since. It takes place after Resident Evil 6 in the timeline but tells a self-contained story, so you need no prior knowledge. Series regulars like Leon Kennedy and Ada Wong sit this one out on purpose, which is why Ethan being a blank slate works.

The direct sequel is Resident Evil Village (2021), which picks up three years later with Ethan and Mia. Village is lighter, more action-focused and roughly twice as broad in scope. Resident Evil Requiem (2026) continues the mainline story with a new lead, Grace Ashcroft, and brings Leon Kennedy back into the picture.

There is no remake or remaster of Resident Evil 7, because it has never needed one. Instead it got a free next-generation update in June 2022 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, adding ray tracing, higher frame rates and 3D audio. The Gold Edition bundles the base game with Banned Footage Vol. 1 and 2, Not a Hero and End of Zoe.

Play the base game first, then the DLC in order. If Ethan’s story is what you are after, go 7, then Village. If you are new to the whole franchise, this is honestly a better first Resident Evil than the 1996 original or its remake, because it teaches the survival horror rhythm without the tank controls.

Where to play

As of October 2026, Resident Evil 7 is cheap and everywhere. On Steam it lists at $19.99 for the standard edition, with a 17+ age gate and an 83 Metacritic score. The Gold Edition costs a little more and is the version to buy, since it includes every piece of DLC.

Console owners can purchase it digitally on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. The PS4 and Xbox One versions upgrade to the newer hardware at no extra cost. PlayStation VR support is PS4-only and did not carry over to PS VR2.

Capcom also brought it to Apple silicon Macs, iPhone 15 Pro and later, and M-series iPads in July 2024. Nintendo Switch 2 received a native port in February 2026 alongside Village and Requiem, replacing the old cloud-streaming version that was limited to Japan.

Subscriptions rotate. Resident Evil 7 has appeared on Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra more than once and dropped off again, so check the catalogue the week you want to play rather than assuming. On Steam Deck it carries Valve’s Verified badge as of October 2026, and Capcom keeps a beta branch that reverts to the original DirectX 11 build if the ray-traced version misbehaves. It sits comfortably near the top of any list of pc horror games for that reason.

If you liked this

Resident Evil Village (2021) continues Ethan’s story with the same first-person dread, swapped into a gothic European setting.
Outlast (2013) delivers the hide-and-run asylum horror that clearly inspired RE7’s Baker house, with no weapons at all.
Alien: Isolation (2014) gives you another unkillable stalker tracking you through claustrophobic corridors.

FAQ

Is Resident Evil 7 the scariest Resident Evil game?

For most fans, yes. The first act in the Baker house is the most sustained fear the series has produced, and the first-person camera makes it personal in a way the fixed-camera classics never were. It only loses the top spot if you count the 2002 GameCube remake’s Crimson Heads.

Do I need to play the earlier games first?

No. The story stands completely alone until Chris Redfield shows up in the final scene, and even that works as a surprise cameo. You will get more from Resident Evil Village if you play 7 first, though.

How long does it take to beat?

A first playthrough of the main story runs about 9 to 10 hours. Completing the DLC adds another 4 to 5. Speedrunners finish Madhouse in under two hours once they know the item placements, which is how you earn the infinite ammo unlocks.

Can you play Resident Evil 7 in third person?

No. Unlike Village, which added a third-person mode in its Gold Edition, Resident Evil 7 has only ever been first person. The PS4 VR mode is the only alternative camera.

Is Resident Evil 7 too gory for younger players?

It earned its mature rating. Expect severed limbs, a chainsaw fight in a morgue, dinner scenes with maggots and a lot of black mold bursting out of human bodies. Players who cannot handle gore should look at a psychological thriller like Silent Hill 2 instead, which scares with implication rather than viscera.
