Ecto-Web is a small, independent site, and we keep our handling of your data as simple as the site itself. This page explains what little information passes through our servers when you visit, why it does, and what you can do about it.
The short version
We don’t ask you to sign up. There are no user accounts, no comment sections and no newsletter at the moment. You can read everything on Ecto-Web without telling us who you are.
What we do see is the basic technical information that every website receives when a browser connects to it. That’s covered below.
What we collect automatically
When you load a page, our hosting infrastructure records standard server logs. These typically include:
- Your IP address
- The type and version of your browser and operating system
- The pages you requested and the time you requested them
- The site that referred you, if your browser sends that information
We use these logs to keep the site running, spot errors and understand whether anything is being abused. We do not combine them with other data to build a profile of you.
Cloudflare
Ecto-Web sits behind Cloudflare, which protects the site from attacks and helps pages load faster. To do that, Cloudflare processes connection details such as your IP address and request headers as traffic passes through its network. Cloudflare may also set a cookie that it uses to tell real visitors apart from automated bots.
This processing happens on Cloudflare’s systems under Cloudflare’s own privacy policy. We don’t control it, but we chose Cloudflare specifically because it is a widely used, well-documented service with clear data practices.
Cookies
We only set cookies that the site needs to function. These are sometimes called essential or strictly necessary cookies. They do things like remember a display preference for the duration of your visit or support the security checks mentioned above.
We don’t use cookies for advertising, and we don’t sell or share cookie data with ad networks.
Analytics
At some point we may add a privacy-friendly analytics tool so we can see which articles people actually read. If we do, it will be one that aggregates visits without tracking individuals across the web and without storing personal identifiers. We’ll update this page when that happens.
Embedded media
Some pages embed content from other services, such as film trailers or maps. When a page with an embed loads, your browser connects directly to that third party, which may set its own cookies and collect its own data, just as if you had visited that service yourself.
We don’t control what those services do. If you’d rather avoid this, you can block third-party cookies in your browser settings, or simply not interact with the embed.
Images and credits
Artwork, posters and stills on Ecto-Web come from sources such as The Movie Database (TMDB) and from publishers, studios and distributors. We credit those sources where they appear. Serving an image from a third party can mean that provider sees your IP address when the image loads, in the same way as the embeds described above.
How long we keep data
Server logs are kept for a limited period and then deleted or overwritten. We don’t retain them any longer than we need for security and troubleshooting. Because we don’t hold accounts or personal profiles, there is no long-term store of information about individual visitors.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to request that it be corrected or deleted, or to object to how it’s used. In practice, since we only hold short-lived technical logs, there is usually very little to find. But if you’d like to ask, use the contact details on our Contact page and we’ll respond as quickly as we can.
Children
Ecto-Web isn’t aimed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect any information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has somehow provided us with personal data, let us know and we’ll remove it.
Changes to this policy
As the site grows we may add features that change how data is handled. When that happens we’ll revise this page and note the date it was last updated at the bottom. If a change is significant, we’ll say so plainly rather than bury it.
Questions
If anything here is unclear, or you want to know more about how we handle your information, reach out through our Contact page. We’d rather answer a question than leave you guessing.
