Resident Evil reaches $361.1M worldwide as China fuels Cregger’s biggest hit

Deadline puts Cregger's Resident Evil at $361.1M worldwide after five weekends, with $212.7M overseas and China's holiday run driving the climb.

CONFIRMED

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot has climbed to $361.1M worldwide after its fifth weekend, according to Deadline. That figure already overtakes the $320M number still circulating in a lot of coverage, and Deadline credits China’s National Day Golden Week holidays for the push that made this Cregger’s biggest movie ever.

What we know

Deadline reports that the Sony and Constantin release returned to No. 1 on the global weekend chart in its fourth frame (Oct 9-11) with $62.7M worldwide. That lifted its cume to $323.1M (per Screen Rant and Yahoo, citing Box Office Mojo), which Deadline says made it Cregger’s highest-grossing film, ahead of Weapons at about $270M worldwide.

The engine was China. Sony opened the film there on Oct 5, and Deadline credits Golden Week with pushing it back to the top spot. At that point the international cume stood at $181.7M across 38,150+ screens in 67 offshore markets. Japan opened at $3.6M.

One weekend later (Oct 16-18), the film added $5.5M domestic, and Variety reported $9.3M from China alone, taking the global total to $361.1M. Foreign markets account for $212.7M of that, well over half the haul.

The domestic launch was strong too. Deadline reported a U.S. opening of about $60M from 3,684 theaters on Sept 18-20, calling it the best ever for both Cregger and the franchise. For context, The Hollywood Reporter said the film held a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score before opening. Austin Abrams stars.

A correction on the theater count: the “cut from 900 theaters” framing is misleading. Screen Rant, citing Box Office Mojo, says the film dropped from 3,684 to 3,085 theaters by Oct 11, and Collider says it lost another 380 in weekend five to land at 2,705. That is a gradual slide of roughly 900-plus since opening, not one single cut.

What we don’t know yet

The franchise record is reported, but not confirmed by Deadline. Screen Rant, Koimoi and UnGeek, citing Sony, say the film passed Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Final Chapter on the Oct 9-11 weekend. Wikipedia and Screen Rant put that film’s worldwide total at $314M, below the reboot’s $323.1M cume at that point. At $361.1M the gap is comfortable, though our approved sources have not stated the record directly.

The “top three horror grosser of 2026” claim comes from ComicBook.com, Geek Culture and Screen Rant, which rank Obsession and Backrooms ahead of Resident Evil. Wikipedia’s U.S. domestic box office chart lists Obsession at about $263.5M and Backrooms at about $197.5M domestically; we found no source confirming the higher worldwide totals some outlets cite for those films. That ranking is plausible but unverified by an approved source. Those same totals mean an IGN Pakistan headline saying Resident Evil is “outpacing” Backrooms and Obsession is wrong if read as cumulative gross. It may refer to pace or weekend rank; we have not checked the article text.

The budget, at least, is settled. The Numbers, Box Office Mojo, Wikipedia, The Hollywood Reporter and Variety all put it at $75M.

What is rumored

A box-office tracker account on X, quoted by The Source on Oct 19, claims the film is tracking past $400M worldwide. That is a single social post with no track record we can verify, and ComicBook.com argues the film has no chance of reaching Backrooms’ $400.6M. Treat it as an unverified projection.

JoBlo floated a $500M finish as a question, and Screen Rant framed it as a best-case scenario. Neither is a studio projection.

A tracker account called Global Box Office also posted that the franchise record had fallen, relayed by Destructoid via Yahoo. Its $320M figure falls short of the $323.1M cume that Screen Rant and Yahoo, citing Box Office Mojo, reported at that milestone, and the post itself remains single-source social media.

What it means

The Golden Week bump did its job, but the weekly numbers are tapering. Weekend five brought in about $22.6M globally by Deadline’s figures, and competition is arriving. Street Fighter opened to $51.1M worldwide on Oct 16-18 (Deadline, via Geek Culture and Gaming Route), the same frame in which Resident Evil slipped to seventh domestically.

So how high can it climb? The honest answer is nobody with studio data has said. What is solid: Cregger went from Barbarian cult favorite to Weapons breakout to the director of the biggest Resident Evil movie on record by most accounts, with China doing a lot of the heavy lifting. For a franchise that spent years as a punchline among survival horror fans, that is a genuinely strange and fun place to be.
