Prisoners writer Aaron Guzikowski hired to script new Alien movie, Deadline confirms

Deadline confirms Prisoners writer Aaron Guzikowski is scripting a new Alien film. THR reports a Prometheus link, but no director is attached.

CONFIRMED

Aaron Guzikowski, the writer of Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners and creator of Raised by Wolves, is scripting a new Alien movie for 20th Century Studios. Deadline says it “can confirm” the hire, after The Hollywood Reporter broke the news on Friday, Oct 23, 2026. Ridley Scott’s Scott Free is producing, and the project is in very early development.

What we know

What We Know (2021)
What We Know (2021) still

Deadline reports that Ridley Scott and Michael Pruss are producing through Scott Free, with J.R. Young overseeing for 20th Century Studios. TheWrap also names Young. Cosmic Book News named a “Scott Aversano” as the studio executive, but that name shows up nowhere else and looks like an error.

Scott is not directing. Bloody Disgusting, citing THR, reports that no director is attached and that Scott is on board only as producer. Deadline and TheWrap say the same. Any headline suggesting Sir Ridley is back behind the camera is wrong.

This also isn’t an “official announcement,” whatever MovieWeb’s headline says. Everything so far comes from trade scoops (THR first, then Deadline and TheWrap). We have seen no studio press release.

Guzikowski fits Scott Free like a glove. He created Raised by Wolves for HBO Max, which ran two seasons, and Scott directed its first two episodes. TheWrap lists his other projects as an original sci-fi film for Jon Watts at 20th Century, a Philip K. Dick adaptation for Sony Pictures and an animated Death Stranding adaptation.

What we don’t know yet

Where this film sits on the timeline is the big open question. Deadline says it is not known whether the movie follows 2024’s Alien: Romulus, and its report does not describe it as a Prometheus or Covenant follow-up. Bloody Disgusting, citing THR, goes further and reports the film will not be a Romulus sequel.

So the trades are not committing to the same level of detail. There is no director, cast, title or release date, and none should be assumed.

What is rumored

The Hollywood Reporter’s original scoop reportedly ties the film to Scott’s Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), with Michael Fassbender’s android David as the connective tissue. THR also reports Fassbender is not attached. TheWrap, Nerdist and Laughing Place repeated the detail. THR has a strong track record, but Deadline’s confirmation does not include this, and no studio has said it. Treat it as reported, not confirmed.

A weaker claim says Scott personally turned to Guzikowski to jumpstart the project. That comes from unnamed sources cited by THR and relayed secondhand by Fiction Horizon. We have not seen the original THR wording, so file it as low confidence.

Some outlets are speculating that this effectively replaces the Romulus sequel. Nerdist calls it “quite possible,” and MEAWW floats a “soft reboot.” Neither Deadline nor THR says this. The Romulus sequel was announced in 2024 and is reported to be in limbo, but it has not been officially cancelled.

For context, Scott was quoted telling AlloCiné in August 2026, “I’m rewriting the next Alien film.” Secondary outlets Phantasmag and iHorror also say he told the Los Angeles Times that a third prequel would continue David’s story. We have not verified those interviews directly.

What it means

The franchise is currently running in several lanes. Fede Álvarez’s Romulus grossed over $350M worldwide, per Deadline. Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth premiered on FX in August 2025 and was renewed for a second season in November 2025, with production moving to London, also per Deadline. Scott Free produces that show too.

Hiring Guzikowski reads like Scott Free keeping things in the family. As a fan, my take: Prisoners is a masterclass in suffocating dread and moral rot, and Raised by Wolves was obsessed with androids, faith and creation. If the David angle THR reported holds up, that is a pretty natural match for the prequels’ themes of a creation turning on its makers.

That is still an if. Right now the only hard facts are a writer, two producers and a studio executive. Until 20th Century says something itself, the timeline question stays open.
