The scariest games to play on Halloween night

The best scary games to play on Halloween are the ones that fit the night you actually have: Resident Evil 7 and Silent Hill 2 if you are alone with the lights off, Phasmophobia or Lethal Company if friends are over, and Iron Lung or Mouthwashing if you only have an hour before bed. This is the October 2026 edition of Ecto-Web’s Halloween list, with every pick sorted by mood and tagged with platforms, honest scare ratings and a rough playtime. We leave prices out on purpose, because Steam, PlayStation and Xbox all run Halloween sales that move numbers by the day, so check your storefront before you buy.

How to pick your game before the sun goes down

Halloween night has a shape. Early evening is trick-or-treaters and people wandering in and out, which kills any slow-burn horror game. Late evening is when a group settles in. Midnight is when you are alone and the house is quiet enough to hear your own fridge hum.

So we built three shelves. Solo picks are long, atmospheric and best played start to finish over a few nights, with Halloween as the climax. Co-op picks are loud, chaotic and forgiving of someone grabbing more candy mid-session. Short picks are complete experiences you can finish before 2 a.m.

Scare levels are our own, out of 5. A 5 means at least one of us had to pause and walk to the kitchen. Gore and jump scare notes are there so you can hand the controller to the right person. If you want the deeper catalogue beyond these twelve, our rundown of the best horror games you can play right now covers the rest of the shelf.

Solo picks: lights off, headphones on

These four reward patience and silence. Play them alone or with one friend watching who promises not to talk.

Capcom’s 2017 reset is still the entry we hand to people who have never played a Resident Evil game. The first three hours in the Baker house are the most sustained dread the series has ever produced, and the shift to first person makes every door a small act of courage. Jack Baker stalking you through the main hall is one of those sequences you remember years later, like a great movie scene you can quote.

It suits anyone who wants real tension with the safety net of guns and herbs. It does not suit anyone squeamish about dismemberment or bugs. The back half gets more action-heavy, so if you are pacing it over the week, time your Halloween session for the house and the old house. On PS5 and Xbox Series the free next-gen update runs beautifully, and the 2024 Mac and iPhone ports mean you can genuinely play this on a laptop at a Halloween party.

Resident Evil Village (2021) for the same first-person view with a faster, pulpier pace. Resident Evil 2 (2019) for the classic police station in modern clothes. Resident Evil Requiem (2026) for the newest chapter if you have cleared the back catalogue.

Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake)

Bloober Team’s remake of Konami’s 2001 masterpiece is the rare case where the new version earns the name. The over-the-shoulder camera and Akira Yamaoka’s returning score make Silent Hill feel heavier and wetter than ever, and the apartment complex alone is a full evening of pure fog-soaked misery. Pyramid Head’s first appearance lands exactly as hard as it did on the PlayStation 2, just with better lighting.

This one is for players who want the creepy over the loud. It never leans on jump scares, and the horror is emotional, so you will carry it around for days. It is a poor fit for a party. Play it alone, on a weeknight leading up to Halloween, and save the hospital for the 31st. Note that the remake launched on PS5 and PC in October 2024 and arrived on Xbox Series X/S in November 2025, so owners of any current console can play it this Halloween.

Silent Hill f (2025) for Konami’s newest take, set in 1960s Japan. Signalis (2022) for a love letter to PS1-era Silent Hill in a sci-fi skin. Visage (2020) for the slow psychological haunted-house dread.

Alien: Isolation

Length15 to 20 hours

Twelve years on and nothing has beaten Creative Assembly’s xenomorph. The alien is not scripted. It hunts you by sound and sight, learns your hiding spots and will pull you out of a locker if you hold your breath too long. That unpredictability is why Isolation is the only 5/5 on the solo shelf: you never know where it is, only that it is close.

It belongs to anyone who loved Ridley Scott’s 1979 film and wants to live inside Sevastopol station for a week. It is wrong for players who hate stealth or who get frustrated by repeating a stretch five times. The game is long enough that you should start it well before Halloween and make the medical bay your holiday centrepiece. The 2019 Switch port is still a quiet technical miracle, and a sequel is confirmed to be in development at Creative Assembly, so there is no better time to catch up.

Amnesia: The Bunker

Length5 to 7 hours

Frictional Games threw out the corridor structure of The Dark Descent and built a single WWI bunker you explore however you like. There is one monster, a generator that keeps the lights on, and a dwindling supply of fuel. Every decision becomes a trade: do you make noise to break a door, or burn precious bullets to stop a rat swarm?

The Bunker suits players who love systems, the kind who enjoy planning a route and then watching it fall apart. The monster comes when it hears you, so the fear is self-inflicted and relentless. Six hours is short enough to finish across Halloween weekend, which is a big part of its appeal. It is one of the finest pc horror games of the decade and runs fine on modest hardware.

Co-op picks: for a full house

Co-op horror is a different animal. The scares come from your friends screaming into their mics as much as from the monsters, and that is exactly the point.

Game Year Players Scare level Platforms Session length

Kinetic Games’ ghost-hunting sim is the Halloween game. You and up to three friends walk into a house with EMF readers, spirit boxes and a van full of nerves, and you have to identify which type of ghost is haunting it before it kills you. The game listens to your microphone, so saying the ghost’s name out loud can provoke it. Hunts turn a confident team into four people whispering in a closet.

It is perfect for a mixed group, because the zero-gore design means squeamish friends can play, and the scare still hits hard. It arrived on PS5, PS VR2 and Xbox Series in October 2024 with cross-play, so a console-and-PC household can finally hunt together. If your group wants a step up in intensity after a few houses, our roundup of cooperative survival horror games has the heavier options.

Lethal Company

Zeekerss’ scrap-collecting nightmare is the funniest horror game ever made, and it is somehow also one of the scariest. You land on abandoned moons, loot industrial facilities for junk to meet a quota, and get picked off by monsters while your friends’ voices fade out as they walk away. The proximity voice chat does more work than any script could.

It suits a group that wants to laugh as much as scream, and the ten-minute days make it ideal for a party where people drift in and out. It is still in early access on Steam only, with no console version, so plan accordingly. Someone always dies to the Bracken on their first run. That is tradition now.

The Quarry

Co-opPass-the-controller or online

Supermassive Games made The Quarry for exactly this night. Nine camp counsellors stay one more evening at Hackett’s Quarry, and you steer them through a summer-camp slasher where any of them can die based on your choices. Couch co-op assigns characters to different players, so the person who gets Jacob killed has to live with it in the room.

This is the pick for a crowd that loves horror movies and arguing. The cast includes David Arquette and Lance Henriksen, the tone is pure 1980s campfire, and the full playthrough runs the length of three features. Gore is heavy and frequent, so it is the wrong choice if someone in the room cannot handle it. A Movie Mode lets you set the outcomes and just watch, which is a lovely option for the last hour when everyone is tired.

If you liked this

Until Dawn (2024 remake, by Ballistic Moon) for Supermassive’s snowbound original. The Casting of Frank Stone (2024) for a slower Dead by Daylight spin-off. The Dark Pictures: Little Hope (2020) for witch-trial dread in a tighter five hours.

Supermassive took over from Tarsier for the third entry, released by Bandai Namco in October 2025, and it is the first game in the series with proper co-op. You and a friend play Low and Alone, two children crossing the Spiral, solving puzzles together while giant grotesques stomp past. Low’s bow and Alone’s wrench give you different jobs, which keeps both players busy.

It is the gentlest pick on this shelf and the best choice for a horror-curious partner or an older kid. The scares come from scale and silence rather than blood. Co-op is online only, with no couch mode, but a Friend’s Pass means only one of you needs to own the game. Fans of Michael Myers specifically should also know the licensed Halloween: The Game content keeps growing through 2026, if asymmetrical slasher multiplayer is more your speed.

Short picks: done before 2 a.m.

Sometimes you want the fear without the commitment. These four are complete, memorable and finished in a single sitting.

David Szymanski’s one-room horror game puts you inside a rusted submarine at the bottom of an ocean of blood, with no window, steering by coordinates and a camera that takes grainy photos of whatever is outside. You never see the ocean directly. That is the entire trick, and it works for sixty straight minutes.

It is the ideal palate cleanser for Halloween night: short, cheap, and so claustrophobic you will want to open a window afterwards. Anyone with a fear of the deep should think twice. Everyone else should play it in one sitting with the lights off and resist checking the clock.

Mouthwashing

Best withSolo, mature audience
Length2 to 3 hours

Wrong Organ’s 2024 breakout follows the crew of a freighter after a crash, told out of order across a year, in chunky PS1-style visuals that make every face feel wrong. The horror here is human. It is about guilt, responsibility and what people do to each other when rescue is never coming, and it goes to genuinely dark places.

It is for adults who like horror movies with a point, and it absolutely is not a party game. Content warnings matter here, so read them first. Three hours is enough to finish it after the trick-or-treaters stop knocking, and you will spend the rest of the night thinking about it.

Airdorf’s exorcism trilogy, published by New Blood, looks like an Atari 2600 game and scares like a Blumhouse trailer. You play a priest in 1980s Connecticut returning to the house where a possession went wrong, armed with a crucifix and not much else. The rotoscoped cutscenes and text-to-speech demon voices make the pixel art far more unsettling than it has any right to be.

It belongs to anyone who grew up on The Exorcist and wants that specific Catholic dread. Each of the three chapters is around two hours, so you can play chapter one on Halloween and save the rest. Jump scares are frequent and loud, which some players love and others find exhausting.

Crow Country

Scare level3/5
GoreModerate
Jump scaresFew
Best withNostalgia, a notepad
Length5 to 7 hours

SFB Games built a dead-on tribute to 1990s survival horror set in an abandoned theme park in 1990. Tank controls are optional, puzzles are proper item-combining brainteasers, and the monsters are lumpy, wet and wrong. It is the most charming game on this list and still manages real creeping unease.

Crow Country suits players who miss the original Resident Evil and Silent Hill but do not want to fight a 1996 camera all night. There is an Exploration Mode with no enemies for anyone who wants the puzzles and the atmosphere without the stress. Secret endings reward a second run, and the whole thing fits inside one long Halloween evening with time to spare. Veterans of classic horror survival games will spot every reference.

A sample Halloween night schedule

The trick is matching intensity to the hour. Here is how we would run a full evening with friends, then a solo finish.

Time Mood Game Why it fits
6 to 8 p.m. Doorbell chaos Lethal Company Ten-minute rounds survive interruptions
8 to 10 p.m. Everyone settled Phasmophobia Four players, no gore, big screams
10 p.m. to midnight Movie-night energy The Quarry Play chapters 1 to 4 as a group
Midnight onward House gone quiet Iron Lung, then Resident Evil 7 One short shock, then the Baker house

If your group skews toward films, swap the 10 p.m. slot for one of our halloween night horror movie picks and come back to the controllers afterwards. Carpenter’s 1978 Halloween pairs with Crow Country better than you would think.

If gore is the dealbreaker

Plenty of people want the spooky without the viscera. Phasmophobia, Little Nightmares III and Iron Lung are all nearly bloodless and still frightening. Alien: Isolation has deaths but rarely dwells on them. Crow Country’s Exploration Mode removes combat entirely.

The ones to avoid are Resident Evil 7, The Quarry and Mouthwashing. All three are great, and all three will upset a squeamish friend inside the first hour.

FAQ

What is the scariest game on this list?

Alien: Isolation. The unscripted alien means you never feel safe, and the sound design punishes you for trying to rush. Resident Evil 7 is a close second, with far more jump scares.

Which scary game is best for a group where some people have never played horror?

Phasmophobia. There is no gore, the rules are simple, and nobody controls a character who can die on screen. The fear comes from the dark house and your own imagination, which works on veterans and first-timers alike.

What is a good scary game I can finish in one night?

Iron Lung takes about an hour and Mouthwashing about three. Amnesia: The Bunker is the longest game we would call a one-nighter at roughly six hours, and that is for players who commit.

Are any of these games on Switch?

Alien: Isolation, Crow Country and Little Nightmares III all have native Switch versions, and Little Nightmares III also runs on Switch 2. Resident Evil 7 is cloud-only on Switch, so a stable connection is a must.

Should I play these before or after watching a horror movie?

Before, for the group games, because movies wind people down while Phasmophobia and Lethal Company wind them up. Save the solo games for after everyone leaves, when the house is quiet and the fear has room to work.
