The best halloween movie marathon is built around who is on the couch, not around a random pile of classics. Below are five themed lineups with runtimes, honest scare ratings and a seven-night countdown to October 31. Pick the night that matches your crowd and you are done planning.
How to plan a marathon that people actually finish
Four films is the sweet spot. Three feels short. Five means someone falls asleep during the last act and never forgives you.
Order matters more than the picks. Open with something fun and familiar. Put the scariest film third, while everyone is still awake. Close with a crowd-pleaser so nobody drives home shaking.
Budget time in real minutes. Every lineup below lists theatrical runtimes and a total. Add fifteen minutes per film for snacks, bathroom runs and arguing about the ending.
One honesty note on streaming. Licensing for these films rotates month to month, and I put this plan together ahead of October 2026, so I could not lock in where each title will sit that week. Most are cheap digital rentals year round. Check your services a few days out and rent the gaps.
Night 1: Slasher night
The mood here is masked killers, autumn leaves and a synth score. This is the lineup for people who want Halloween to feel like Halloween.
| Title | Year | Subgenre | Scare level | Runtime |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Halloween | 1978 | Slasher | 3/5 | 91 min |
| A Nightmare on Elm Street | 1984 | Dream slasher | 3/5 | 91 min |
| Scream | 1996 | Meta slasher | 3/5 | 111 min |
| Black Christmas | 1974 | Proto-slasher | 3/5 | 98 min |
Total: 391 minutes, about six and a half hours.
John Carpenter’s original still works because it is patient. Long takes, a mask in the background, that piano riff. Jamie Lee Curtis makes Laurie Strode feel like a real teenager rather than a scream machine. Start here. It sets the tone for the whole night.
Wes Craven’s Elm Street adds surreal dream logic and Robert Englund’s Freddy, who is still funny and still nasty. Scream, also Craven, lets your group laugh at the rules it just learned. Close on Bob Clark’s Black Christmas, the 1974 sorority chiller that came out four years before Halloween and arguably invented the point-of-view killer shot. The title lets you joke that the Christmas season starts November 1.

Friday the 13th (1980) for a campfire body count and the twist everyone pretends they knew. Halloween (2018) to see Laurie forty years on. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) if your group wants grimier.
Night 2: Supernatural night

This one is for fans who find knives boring and ghosts terrifying. Haunted houses, possession and a closer that will ruin sleep.
| Title | Year | Subgenre | Scare level | Runtime |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Poltergeist | 1982 | Haunted house | 3/5 | 114 min |
| The Conjuring | 2013 | Paranormal | 4/5 | 112 min |
| The Others | 2001 | Gothic ghost story | 3/5 | 104 min |
| Hereditary | 2018 | Family horror | 5/5 | 127 min |
Total: 457 minutes, roughly seven and a half hours. Drop The Others if you need to be in bed before 2 a.m.
Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist is the warm-up. It is big, loud and full of Spielberg-era wonder, with a clown doll that still earns its reputation. James Wan’s The Conjuring is where the night turns. The clapping game in the dark farmhouse is one of the best sustained scares of its decade.
Alejandro AmenĂ¡bar’s The Others cools things down with fog, candlelight and Nicole Kidman keeping a strict household. Then Ari Aster’s Hereditary. I am rating this one 5/5 on purpose. It is not a jump-scare film. It is a slow dread film about a family coming apart, and the final twenty minutes are the most upsetting thing on this page. Warn your guests before you press play.

Insidious (2010) for Wan doing it again with a red-faced demon. Talk to Me (2022) for a modern possession film with a hand prop you will not forget. The Ring (2002) for the VHS curse that scared a whole generation off television.
Night 3: Beginner night
Built for a first horror marathon or a friend who swears they hate scary movies. Every pick here has jokes, a strong story and a scare level that never passes 3.
| Title | Year | Subgenre | Scare level | Runtime |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shaun of the Dead | 2004 | Zombie comedy | 1/5 | 99 min |
| Trick ‘r Treat | 2007 | Anthology | 2/5 | 82 min |
| The Cabin in the Woods | 2011 | Meta horror | 3/5 | 95 min |
| Get Out | 2017 | Social thriller | 3/5 | 104 min |
Total: 380 minutes, just over six hours.
Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead is the perfect first step. Zombies are real, people die, and you laugh the whole way. Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat is the most Halloween-feeling film ever made, a small-town anthology that stayed on a shelf for two years before Warner gave it a disc release in 2009. Fans found it anyway. Sam, the little trick-or-treater with the burlap sack, is now a genre mascot.
Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods explains the genre while playing it. Jordan Peele’s Get Out closes with a thriller that is more tense than scary, and gives your group something to talk about on the drive home.

What We Do in the Shadows (2014) for vampire flatmates arguing about dishes. Hush (2016) for a tight, bloodless home invasion that runs 81 minutes. The Babadook (2014) when the beginner is ready for something sadder.
Night 4: No-gore family night

For houses with kids, squeamish partners or grandparents who want to join in. Nothing here goes past a 2 on our scale, and nothing bleeds.
| Title | Year | Subgenre | Scare level | Runtime |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hocus Pocus | 1993 | Witch comedy | 1/5 | 96 min |
| Coraline | 2009 | Stop-motion dark fantasy | 2/5 | 100 min |
| Beetlejuice | 1988 | Ghost comedy | 1/5 | 92 min |
| Gremlins | 1984 | Creature feature | 2/5 | 106 min |
Total: 394 minutes, about six and a half hours.
Kenny Ortega’s Hocus Pocus is the easy opener, with Bette Midler having the time of her life. Henry Selick’s Coraline is the one that stays with kids. The button eyes and the Other Mother are genuinely creepy, and that is exactly why it belongs. Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice keeps the energy up with Michael Keaton’s bio-exorcist, and Joe Dante’s Gremlins closes with a small-town Christmas Eve gone wrong, so it doubles as a bridge to December. The microwave scene is the only moment to cover younger eyes.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) for a 76-minute Selick musical that fits any schedule. Ghostbusters (1984) for the library ghost and endless quotes. Monster House (2006) for an animated haunted house with real teeth.
Night 5: Party night
Ten people, costumes, drinks, nobody sitting still. These films survive conversation and reward shouting at the screen.
| Title | Year | Subgenre | Scare level | Runtime |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Rocky Horror Picture Show | 1975 | Musical | 1/5 | 100 min |
| Evil Dead II | 1987 | Splatter comedy | 3/5 | 84 min |
| Tucker and Dale vs Evil | 2010 | Backwoods comedy | 2/5 | 89 min |
| Ready or Not | 2019 | Survival thriller | 3/5 | 95 min |
Total: 368 minutes, a little over six hours.
Jim Sharman’s Rocky Horror is the opener because the party will sing along, and Tim Curry’s Frank-N-Furter remains the most charismatic performance in cult cinema. Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead II is 84 minutes of Bruce Campbell fighting his own hand. It is the loudest film on this list and the best one for a full room.
Eli Craig’s Tucker and Dale vs Evil flips the hillbilly horror cliche and keeps the laughs rolling. Close with Ready or Not from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Samara Weaving in a wedding dress with a shotgun is the right final image for a party.
If the crowd would rather pass a controller between films, our pc horror games list has short picks that work in a twenty-minute break. The tenebris somnia launch piece covers a new FMV horror game that plays like a movie, which fits the night nicely.
A seven-night countdown to October 31
The schedule pages that rank for this topic plan a full month. Most of us cannot watch 31 films in October. One week is realistic. Here is how I run it.
| Night | Date | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Oct 25 | Family night, early start |
| Monday | Oct 26 | One film only: Trick ‘r Treat |
| Tuesday | Oct 27 | Beginner night, first two films |
| Wednesday | Oct 28 | Beginner night, last two films |
| Thursday | Oct 29 | Supernatural night, split over two evenings if needed |
| Friday | Oct 30 | Party night |
| Saturday | Oct 31 | Slasher night, ending on Halloween (1978) |
Yes, that means watching Halloween last instead of first on the 31st. On the night itself, Carpenter’s film belongs at midnight. If you want a longer menu for the big night, our halloween night horror rundown goes deeper on single-film picks.
Want something new in the mix? 2025 and 2026 brought fresh options, and Black Phone 2 is the one most likely to be on a service by late October. Our black phone 2 piece has the details. The Backrooms film from A24 is the other big question mark for the season, so check our backrooms film release date article before penciling it in.
FAQ
How many movies should a Halloween marathon have?
Four, with fifteen-minute breaks. That lands between six and seven hours including intermissions. Go to five only if you start before 6 p.m.
What order should I watch them in?
Familiar first, scariest third, crowd-pleaser last. Never end on your heaviest film unless everyone is sleeping over.
What is the least scary lineup here?
Family night. Nothing in it rates above 2/5 and there is no gore. Beginner night is the next step up, topping out at 3/5.
Where can I stream these films in October 2026?
Rights rotate monthly, so I could not confirm placements ahead of time. Most titles here are available as digital rentals on the major storefronts all year. Check your subscriptions the week before and rent whatever is missing.
Can I mix the lineups?
Absolutely. Swap Scream into party night, or move Get Out to slasher night as the modern closer. The scare ratings and runtimes are there so you can rebuild the evening around your own crowd.
